The Jumolhari Trek in Bhutan is a captivating adventure in the Himalayas. Starting with an acclimatization hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, the trek begins at Drugyel Dzong ruins in Paro Valley. Over the first three days, you’ll trek along the Pachhu river valley to Jangothang base camp, offering stunning views of 7315m Mount Jumolhari. After a day of acclimatization, the trek continues through high pasturelands and stony trails, reaching Neyle La Pass (4700m) and then Yaklayla Pass (4942m), with breathtaking views of Mount Jichu Drake and Tsherim Gang. The journey ends with a descent along the Thimphu Chu river. The last two days are spent exploring Thimphu and Punakha valleys before your return flight.

Begin your adventure with a flight to Paro from Delhi or Kathmandu, offering spectacular Himalayan views. The Kathmandu route provides more extensive views, including Mount Everest (8849m), Lhotse (8515m), Makalu (8481m), and Kanchenjunga (8586m). As you approach Paro, you’ll glimpse sacred peaks like Mount Jumolhari (7326m) and Jichu Drake (6662m). On arrival, meet your guide and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. If time permits, explore Paro’s sights: Rinpung Dzong, a traditional wooden bridge, the ancient Kichu Monastery, and the Drukgyal Dzong ruins. Spend the evening strolling through Paro town. Overnight in Paro.

After breakfast, embark on an acclimatization hike to Bhutan’s famous Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) at 3100m. Drive 20 minutes to the trailhead and hike through pine, fir, and hemlock forests. Reach a scenic viewpoint for photography before descending stone steps to the monastery. After visiting, return to the cafeteria for lunch and hike back to the base where your car awaits. Spend the evening in Paro town. Overnight in Paro.

Start your trek from Drugyel Dzong ruins (2580m) after a 12km drive from Paro. Walk downhill, following the Pachhu River, and traverse rice terraces, apple orchards, and traditional farmhouses. Pass through Mitshi Zampa and Sangatan, reaching the army post of Gunitsawa (2810m) for a permit check. Cross the Pachhu River on a wooden bridge and climb to Sharna Zampa (2870m), camping in nearby meadows.

Trek 20km through pine, oak, and spruce forests, ascending and descending along the Pachhu River. After 2 hours, reach Shingkharap (3110m) for a rest stop. Enjoy a hot lunch after crossing a bridge. Follow the trail through rhododendron forests, cross the river again, and reach your camp at Soi Thangkha (3750m) amidst beautiful meadows.

Ascend above the tree line to 3700m, following the river and passing an army camp. Trek through muddy sections, mani walls, and yak herder settlements, enjoying stunning mountain views. After lunch in a yak herder’s camp, continue to Jangothang base camp (4040m) with spectacular views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake.

Acclimatize with a four-hour hike north of camp to view Mount Jichu Drakye (6989m) and Mount Jumolhari. Spot blue sheep, griffon vultures, golden eagles, and blue poppies. Alternatively, take a two-hour excursion to the twin Tshophu Lakes. Relax at the Jangothang base camp, a flat grassy area with an old fortress, under the towering peaks of Jumolhari and Jichu Drake.

Trek 18km, following a stream and crossing a bridge before climbing to a ridge with breathtaking views of Jumolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherim Gang. Continue through the valley and ascend to Ngye La pass (4830m). Descend gradually to Lingshi (4010m) with panoramic mountain views and the option to visit Lingshi Dzong.

Leave the Jumolhari trek route, climbing to a ridge with a white chorten. Follow the Mo Chhu valley, cross the river, and ascend steeply to Yeli La pass (4942m). Enjoy clear day views of Jumolhari, Gangchen Ta, Tsherim Gang, and Masang Gang. Descend to Shodu (4100m) and camp in a meadow with a chorten.

Descend through forests of rhododendron, juniper, and alpine trees along the Thimphu River. Enjoy stunning views of cliffs and waterfalls. After lunch by the riverside, ascend gradually to Barshong Dzong ruins (3600m), an old supply base for Lingzhi Dzong. Camp in Barshong.

Start with a gradual ascent through dense forests to the Thimphu Chhu River. The trail follows the river, climbing over ridges and descending to streams, before reaching Dodena (2600m). Drive to Thimphu for the night.

Drive to Punakha, stopping at Dochu La pass (3100m) with 108 chortens and spectacular Himalayan views. Descend through forests, stopping at Metsina for a hike to Chimi Lhakhang Temple. Continue to Punakha, visiting the Punakha Dzong after lunch. Overnight in Punakha.

Drive back to Paro via Dochu La pass, visiting the Druk Wangyel Monastery. Continue to Thimphu, stopping at the Centenary Farmers Market if it’s the weekend. In Paro, spend the evening exploring the town. Overnight in Paro.

Drive to the airport for your departure. Have a pleasant flight back home.
