The Laya Gasa Trek takes you through the semi-nomadic village of Laya, known for its unique culture, traditions, and appearance. It is one of the most scenic long-distance treks in Bhutan, running along the Tibetan border and offering breathtaking views of pristine landscapes. Starting at Drugyel in Paro, the trek passes through serene alpine meadows and high mountain passes with magnificent views of Mount Jumolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherim Gang.

The trek traverses the remote village of Laya, where you can experience the unique culture and traditions of the indigenous Layap people. Along the trail, you’ll also encounter native animals such as blue sheep and Takins. After reaching Laya, the trek descends to Gasa, where you can relax and rejuvenate in the hot springs. Begin your trek at the historic Drugyel Dzong (2580m), a short 12km drive north of Paro valley. Meet your trekking crew and start your journey on a wide trail alongside the Pa Chhu (Paro River). The trail gradually ascends, offering views of rice paddies and millet fields. As the valley widens, you’ll encounter apple orchards, traditional Bhutanese farmhouses, and the small settlements of Mitshi Zampa and Sangatan. Follow the route through blue pine forests to the army post of Gunitsawa at 2810m for permit checks. Cross the Pa Chhu on a wooden bridge and ascend to Sharna Zampa (2870m) to camp in meadows among the trees.

Follow the trail along the Pachhu (Paro River) through pine, oak, and spruce forests. After 2 hours and several stream crossings, reach Shingkharap (3110m) and cross a bridge for a hot lunch. Take the right route at the trail junction, climb through rhododendron forests, and cross another bridge to reach the camp at 3750m amidst beautiful meadows.

Ascend from camp to an army camp, then follow the river above the tree line, enjoying stunning views of mountain peaks. Pass a muddy section, a mani wall, and enter yak country. Enjoy a hot lunch at a yak herder’s camp before continuing past yak herder settlements and crops like barley, potatoes, and turnips. Cross a plateau and stream bed to reach Jangothang Base Camp (4040m) with breathtaking views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake.

Take a four-hour acclimatization hike north of camp, climbing an open slope for views of Mt. Jichu Drakye (6989m). Hike further to 4895m for an amazing view of Mount Jumolhari. Spot rare blue sheep, Himalayan rhubarb, griffon vultures, golden eagles, and the national flower, the blue poppy. Relax at Jangothang Base, a grassy land with ruins of an old fortress, or rest in camp.

Ascend above the tree line to 3700m, following the river and passing an army camp. Trek through muddy sections, mani walls, and yak herder settlements, enjoying stunning mountain views. After lunch in a yak herder’s camp, continue to Jangothang base camp (4040m) with spectacular views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake.

Follow the stream, cross a bridge, and climb to the first ridge for views of Jumolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherim Gang. Walk a flat track towards the valley, then climb to Ngye La Pass (4700m). Descend to the camp with panoramic views of the peaks and Lingshi Dzong. Visit the tiny fortress overlooking Lingzhi village if time permits. Camp at 4010m.

Enjoy an easy day with pleasant walks through villages and yak herder camps. Visit Lingshi Dzong, a historical way station and defense fort. After lunch, walk to Chebisa, a charming village with a crystal-clear waterfall. Camp by a stream at 3850m.

Begin with a steep climb to Gogu La Pass (4500m), where you might spot blue sheep. Descend through rhododendron bushes to a lunch stop. Continue along a trail with ascents and descents, cross a stream, and walk through rhododendron forests and yak herder camps to reach camp at 4250m.

Climb through an edelweiss-bound trail to Jari La Pass (4700m) with views of Kangbum (6526m). Descend to Tsarijathang valley, the summer residence of Himalayan Takins. Cross streams and ascend to Robluthang, a rocky meadow camp at 4200m.

Climb to Shingchen La Pass (5005m) with views of Gangchenta (Tiger Mountain). Descend through a rocky trail, cross streams, and walk through cedar forests to Lingmithang (4140m). Camp in meadows by the river with views of Gangchenta.

Enjoy a pleasant walk to Laya, passing through a damp forest and following a trail with wonderful views. Arrive at Laya village (3800m), the second highest settlement in Bhutan.

Explore Laya village and experience traditional Bhutanese hospitality. Visit local homes and enjoy tea and Chang (local wine). Observe the unique attire of Layap women, featuring conical bamboo hats decorated with turquoise and silver ornaments.

Descend to an army camp and follow the Mo Chhu (Mother River of Punakha). Cross the river and ascend and descend through juniper and fir forests to Koena (3800m). Meet your driver for a transfer to Gasa village. Enjoy a relaxing dip in the hot springs at Gasa (2900m) to relieve muscle aches after the long trek. This marks the end of your trek, with a drive to Punakha valley the next day.
